
Volleyball loses conference series to OLLU
HAWKINS, Texas – In a delayed set of conference matches due to Friday night's weather and a power outage, the Jarvis Christian volleyball team dropped two conference matches to Our Lady of the Lake University on Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
The Bulldogs finished the regular season 17-11 and 7-9 in Red River Athletic Conference action as they finished fifth in the conference standings. JCU will head to the conference tournament in New Orleans next weekend as the fifth seed out of six in the event.
Match 1
The Bulldogs and Saints traded points early in the first set as Jai Johnson finished off a long rally with a kill to tie the set, 6-6. The Saints would score the next three points to take a lead that would last the rest of the set. Just after OLLU scored to go up 23-19 in the first set, the power went off in the E.W. Rand Center because of thunderstorms in the area. The match was delayed until 11 a.m. Saturday. When the set resume Saturday morning, the Saints scored the last few points to take a 25-19 first set win.
The Saints took all the momentum heading into the second set as they jumped out to a 5-3 lead. OLLU then rattled off 11 points in a row to take a 16-4 lead. The Saints scored the last three points of the set to cruise to a 25-9 second set win.
OLLU started the third set with a 4-1 lead before the Bulldogs scored three in a row to tie the set. The teams traded points and OLLU led 10-9 before going on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 16-9. JCU pulled within four points late in the set, but the Saints finished off the set, 25-20 to complete the sweep.
Match 2
JCU rolled out to a 6-3 lead to start the second match on Saturday. The Saints would respond by rallying to tie the set, 6-6. The teams traded points and kept it close until OLLU built up a 16-12 lead. The Saints then extended the lead to 20-13 before scoring the last five points of the set to take a 25-16 first set win.
OLLU took a 5-3 lead to get the second set started. JCU answered with four points in a row to take an 8-7 lead as Aaronyana Wilson fired a kill on an assist from Johnice Hubbard. The Bulldogs built a 17-13 lead before the Saints stormed back to tie the set, 17-17. With the set tied, 23-23, OLLU took the last two points to claim the second set, 25-23.
The Bulldogs started the third set with a 10-6 lead as they looked to avoid another sweep. OLLU rallied to take a 13-12 lead later in the set. Amariah Kendrick fired back-to-back aces later on as JCU took a 20-17 lead and didn't look back. Johnson came through with the kill to secure a 25-21 third set win for the Bulldogs.
Looking to make a comeback, JCU jumped out a 6-3 lead in the fourth set. The Bulldogs then used a 6-0 rally to build up a 12-4 lead. Trailing by four, the Saints used a rally to pull within one, but JCU answered to take a 19-16 lead. OLLU rattled off six points in a row to reclaim the lead, 23-20 late in the set. The Saints scored the last two points to close out the fourth set, 25-21 and secure the victory, 3-1.

The Bulldogs head to the RRAC Tournament in New Orleans where they will face Louisiana Christian in the first round at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
