Wendon L. Blair Soccer Field

Family members, Jarvis Christian University administration, and supporters from the community were present September 24, 2022 as a ceremony took place to rename the Jarvis Soccer Field to the Wendon L. Blair Soccer Field in honor of Wendon L. Blair – one of the first recruits for the Jarvis Christian soccer program that relaunched in 2014.

Blair was a member of the class of 2018, a JCU presidential scholar, and a student-athlete as part of the inaugural JCU men's soccer team. He was active in campus life, a member of the Pre-Alumni Council, Enactus, Basileus of the Phi Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and President of the National Association of Black Accountants. Blair was also a White House HBCU All-Star Ambassador and a recipient of the Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions on Character Award from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Blair was an avid soccer player, and the first recruit to sign up for soccer when it was reinstated at Jarvis. Following graduation, Blair worked for Microsoft as a US Finance HQ Controller. He was passionate about accounting and finance, and approached each opportunity with a strong work ethic and a positive can-do attitude. These were traits he exhibited throughout his matriculation from a student to an employee. Blair passed away in 2021.

"I always say that if God gave you the talent to make a student, it would be Wendon," JCU President Dr. Lester Newman said. "He brought character, he brought commitment, and he brought dedication, and he was just a wonderful human being. His name will forever be associated with Jarvis Christian University."

As part of the dedication ceremony, a new scoreboard and bleachers were unveiled at the field. The ceremony marked the end of several upgrades to give the JCU soccer program a permanent home on campus. Back in August, new grass was laid and a fence was put up around the perimeter. With the additional set of bleachers, there is now seating on both sides of the field. The new scoreboard is much larger than the previous scoreboard and is visible from all around the facility.

The upgrades will allow the JCU soccer team to practice on campus without having to travel to nearby schools. The facility is also now comparable to other competitors' fields in the Red River Athletic Conference.

"I cannot express the gratitude or excitement our current student-athletes have with the field and this facility," JCU Athletic Director Bob Ladner said. "We thank the board of trustees and we thank Dr. Newman. This is an investment for our student-athletes that are here now and our future student-athletes."
