Wrestling programs add new commits

HAWKINS, Texas - Samyra Thomas and Cedric Abney announced their commitments to the new Jarvis Christian wrestling programs as the 2022 season approaches.

Thomas comes to JCU from Kashmere High School in Houston. She brings in an impressive list of achievements from the high school level that will benefit the JCU women's wrestling program. In the 2022 5A Texas State Wrestling Tournament, Thomas finished in 2nd place at 215 lbs. She also was a two-time placer in the 5A Texas State Wrestling Tournament throughout her high school career.

Abney will be a member of the men's wrestling program. He comes to JCU from Baker High School in Mobile, Alabama. Abney finished in 4th place at 126 lbs. in the 2021 7A Alabama State Wrestling Tournament. He was the first person in school history to place at state.

Along with the other members of both teams, Thomas and Abney will help establish a culture and set the standard for JCU and HBCU wrestling. The men's wrestling program will be one of four HBCUs competing in wrestling, while the women's program will be the only HBCU competing in college wrestling.
