Wrestling announces 2022-23 inaugural slate

HAWKINS, Texas – Jarvis Christian University Head Wrestling Coach Lance Brown announced the 2022-23 men's and women's wrestling schedule Thursday as both teams will begin their inaugural seasons in November.

The men and women will head to Wichita, Kansas to open the season on November 5 at the Falcon Invite. The teams will then make a stop in Oklahoma City for a dual match with Oklahoma City University on November 6. The next weekend, the men will compete at the Viking Open hosted by Carl Albert College in Poteau, Oklahoma on November 12. The women will compete in the same event on November 13. 

On November 19, the men will compete in the Lindenwood men's individual event in St. Charles, Missouri. The women will compete in a dual match with Lindenwood on November 20. Before the Christmas break, the men and women will compete in dual matches with Texas Wesleyan and Schreiner University. The Bulldogs will face Texas Wesleyan in Fort Worth on December 9 before competing with Schreiner in Kerrville, Texas on December 15.

JCU will return to Kerrville for the Schreiner Invitational on January 22. The men will then compete in the SAC/AMC Duals on January 28 in Batesville, Arkansas before heading to the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship in Oklahoma City on February 18. The women will compete in the conference championship on February 25.

The seasons wrap up with the 66th annual NAIA Wrestling National Championship in Wichita, Kansas on March 4 and 5. The NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship will take place on March 10 and 11 in Jamestown, North Dakota.

"I am excited for our inaugural men's and women's wrestling season to kickoff at Jarvis," Brown said. "Our wrestlers have been working hard in preparation as we look forward to competing at the Friends Falcon Invite at Harman Arena in Park City, Kansas."

The JCU men's wrestling program will one of four active programs among the HBCUs. Morgan State will be adding wrestling for the 2023 season, and will be the first NCAA Division I HBCU with the sport. The JCU women's wrestling program will be the only active women's program among HBCUs. JCU is also just the fifth college in Texas to add the sport. JCU joins fellow NAIA members Wayland Baptist University and Texas Wesleyan University in competition in the state. Schreiner University and Texas Woman's University compete at the NCAA level.

JCU will join the Sooner Athletic Conference for wrestling since the Red River Athletic Conference does not sponsor the sport. JCU will join Oklahoma City University, Texas Wesleyan, Wayland Baptist, Central Christian College, and Arkansas Baptist College in competition on the men's side. On the women's side, JCU will join Texas Wesleyan, Wayland Baptist, Oklahoma City, Central Christian, Lyon College, and Missouri Baptist University.
