
Maya Shelby Player Of The Week
WACO, Texas – Desiree Squires of Louisiana Christian University was recognized as the RRAC Softball Player of the Week for Jan. 30-Feb. 5, while Maya Shelby of Jarvis Christian University earned the RRAC Pitcher of the Week honor for the same dates. This is the first set of weekly awards for the 2023 softball season.
Squires batted .571 as the Wildcats opened the season with five games as host of the LCU Invitational. The senior first baseman from Rosepine, La., drove in eight runs on eight hits including two doubles and a home run. Squires had an on-base percentage of .600 and a slugging percentage of .929 while homering in a 7-1 victory over William Woods University (Mo.) and driving in the winning run in a 4-3 win over Missouri Baptist University. LCU starts the season at 4-1.
Shelby collected two shutouts as the Bulldogs started at 3-1 while competing in the LCU Invitational last week. The junior from Sabinal, Texas, struck out 13 hitters while scattering six hits over seven innings in a 5-0 victory over Stephens College (Mo.). Then Shelby delivered a complete game three-hitter against WWU with nine strikeouts. For the week, Shelby struck out 22 hitters while allowing nine hits and a walk.
