
MBB defeats Wiley for first win of the season
TEXARKANA, Texas – With a chance to put the game away, Wiley College's Maurice Harvey went 1-2 at the free throw line with two seconds left in the second half before the game went to overtime and the Jarvis Christian men's basketball team earned an 81-78 victory on Friday to mark the first win of the season.
The Bulldogs improve to 1-1 on the season after losing to Dillard University in the season opener.
Jorden Clark made a layup with three minutes left in the second half to give JCU a 67-62 lead. The Bulldogs would miss several shots and not score again in the second half as Wiley was able to score five points and tie the game to send it to overtime.
James Phillip Russell got things going for the Bulldogs in overtime. He hit a jump shot with 3:40 remaining in overtime as the Bulldogs struck first to take a 69-67 lead. Russell then followed with a layup to put JCU up by four with 3:06 to play. Russell made two free throws and a jump shot shortly after as JCU held a 75-71 lead with 1:43 left in overtime.
The Wildcats would pull back within one with three seconds left in overtime before Jamari Robertson was fouled and sent to the free throw line. He made both free throws to secure the 81-78 JCU win.
Jakari Jackson led the JCU scoring effort as he put up 19 points. He also recorded five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in an impressive performance. Russell scored 16 points as he came up big for the Bulldogs down the stretch. Jakobe Dill also found the double figures as he scored 14 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.
Jorden Clark pulled in 12 rebounds as he led the team in boards. He also scored four points. George Nwogu and Robertson each scored eight points. Nwogu pulled in three rebounds, while Robertson posted two rebounds and an assist.
