Volleyball opens conference play with two wins
HAWKINS, Texas – The Jarvis Christian Volleyball team opened conference play this weekend with wins over the University of the Southwest on Friday night and Saturday afternoon at the Rand Gym.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 sweep Friday night before taking a close win on Saturday in five sets. JCU improves to 7-2 on the season and 2-0 to start conference action. JCU's two wins this weekend snap a 21-match win streak held by the Mustangs dating back to October 13, 2012.
Game 1
JCU cruised to the 3-0 win Friday night in front of a rowdy crowd at the Rand Gym. The Bulldogs went back and forth with the Mustangs in the first set as JCU tied the game at 22. The Bulldogs then scored the next three points to take the first set, 25-22.
The Bulldogs followed by taking the second set, 25-21. With a chance to take the match in straight sets, the Bulldogs held a 20-16 lead in the third set. The Mustangs scored two points to cut into the lead, but JCU responded with five points in a row to claim the third set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.
Asiah West and Aaronyana Wilson each contributed 10 kills as the team totaled 40 in the match. Johnice Hubbard and Kaia Brooks both had nine digs in the win. As a team, the Bulldogs tallied 50 digs. Hubbard also had the only service ace of the match for the Bulldogs.
Game 2
The Bulldogs came out strong Saturday afternoon and took a quick 25-16 win in the first set. Southwest responded with some strong scoring runs in the second set to take the set, 25-19 to even the match. JCU answered with a gutsy 25-23 third set win to take control of the match.
Southwest would not back down as the fourth set came down to the wire. The set went back and forth before the Mustangs pulled away at the end to take the set, 26-24, forcing a fifth set. Like most of the match, the fifth set was back and forth until the end. JCU scored the last two points to pull away and take the fifth set, 15-13, and the match, 3-2 to start conference play with two critical wins.
Aaronyana Wilson had another great performance Saturday as she was the team leader in kills with 13. She also had a dig, a solo block, and a block assist in the effort.
