
W Soccer doubles Paul Quinn, 4-2 to start conference play
DALLAS, Texas – Hariklia Sotelo and Mitzy Guereca continued to be a force for the Bulldogs as the Jarvis Christian women's soccer team captured a 4-2 win over Paul Quinn on Thursday afternoon to start conference play 1-0 for the first time in program history.
With the win, JCU pushes its record over .500 for the first time this season at 4-3 overall and 1-0 in Red River Athletic Conference action. The Bulldogs handed the Tigers their first loss of the season as they move to 4-1-1 overall.
The scoring started early for the Bulldogs as Sotelo scored in the 7th minute on an assist from Angie Rivera. Chondra Espino followed with a goal in the 27th minute to tie the game. Mia Melendez was charged with the assist.
JCU reclaimed the lead just before the break as Magui Luna struck in the 40th minute to score her first goal of the season and give the Bulldogs the 2-1 advantage. Sotelo was credited with the assist.
Coming out of halftime, Espino scored again on an assist by Daisy Robledo to tie the game, 2-2 in the 48th minute. Sotelo would follow in the 50th minute as she booted in her second goal of the day to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. Guereca extended the JCU lead in the 68th minute as she scored on an assist by Elvira Torres to seal the 4-2 JCU win.
Guereca now has six goals scored through six starts this season. She is the team leader in goals scored and shots taken. She is tied with Sotelo for the most shots on goal at 12. Sotelo is right behind Guereca with four goals scored through two starts and appearances in all seven games for the Bulldogs.
Goalkeeper Hailey Rivera allowed two goals in the contest and picked up one save through 90 minutes of action.
