Soccer opens conference play at Paul Quinn

DALLAS, Texas – The Jarvis Christian men's and women's soccer teams will head to Dallas Thursday to start conference action at Paul Quinn. The women will play at 1 p.m. with the guys following at 3:30 p.m.

Women's Soccer

The women's team sits at 3-3 on the season after the 5-1 win over North American University last Saturday. The Paul Quinn women's soccer team is 4-0-1 coming into the matchup with the Bulldogs.

Mitzy Guereca, Gabriela Benavides, and Hailey Rivera rank among conference leaders in several categories. Benavides is tied for fifth in the conference in goals scored with four. She is also tied for fifth in the conference in points with nine so far. Rivera is tied for second in saves with 22 through six games. 

Guereca has been a key player for the Bulldogs this season. She has scored five goals this season to put her tied for second place in the conference. Guereca is also tied for second in points with 13 this season. She has 21 shots this season as well, which ranks third in the conference.

Mitzy Guereca, Benavides, Hariklia Sotelo, Emmalee Lopez, Andrea Mata, Kayla Ochoa, Brisa Ibarra, Angie Rivera, Evelyn Lopez, and Leslie Guereca have all booted in goals for the Bulldogs this season as JCU has averaged 3.67 goals per game. Guereca and Benavides lead the team with 11 shots on goal each.

Men's Soccer

The JCU men's soccer team is 3-1-1 coming off back-to-back wins against Dallas Christian College and North American. Paul Quinn's men's soccer team enters conference play with a 5-1 record this season. The Tigers are riding a five-game win streak since dropping the season opener to Central Baptist College.

Kevin Ochoa and Johan Arevalo lead the team in goals this season with two each. Julian Gomez, Juan Iracheta, Yuneum Rios, Juan Rodriguez, Benito Leon, Kyang Dieu Merci, Gerardo Martinez, Sergio Escareno, and Ignacio Gutierrez have all come through for the Bulldogs with one goal scored.

Martinez leads the team in shots on goal with seven. He has also been credited for two assists, which is tied for second place in the conference with a long list of other players including Dieu Merci from JCU.

Goalkeeper Jahir Arevalo got the start and recorded a shutout in Saturday's win over North American. He had two saves in the effort. Avramov Vladimir has played the goalkeeper position in the other four games this season. Vladimir has allowed five goals through four games to go along with 11 saves.
