
Soccer hosts Southwest for conference home opener
HAWKINS, Texas – The Jarvis Christian soccer teams will host conference foe Southwest on Saturday afternoon as the men and women continue the Red River Athletic Conference slate.
The women will play at 1 p.m. with the men following at 3:30 p.m. Prior to the women's match, a special presentation will take place at the soccer field. New upgrades have taken place since our last home game and we are excited for everyone to see our updates Saturday afternoon.
Women's Soccer
The women are coming off a thrilling 4-2 win against Paul Quinn on Thursday to start conference action with a win for the first time in program history. The Bulldogs look to stay undefeated in conference when they meet the Southwest Mustangs. The Mustangs are also 1-0 in conference coming off a 15-0 thrashing of Texas College.
Mitzy Guereca and Harlikia Sotelo continue to show out for the Bulldogs this season. Guereca ranks second in the RRAC in goals scored with six so far. Sotelo follows right behind with five goals scored as she is tied for third in the RRAC.
Guereca is also second in points in the conference with 15. Sotelo ranks fifth with 11 points.
Guereca, Sotelo, and Gabriela Benavides have ignited the JCU offense by scoring 15 of the team's 26 goals through seven games. Guereca has six, Sotelo has scored five, and Benavides has scored four.
Hailey Rivera has been a mainstay at the goalkeeper position for the Bulldogs as she has earned six starts through seven games. She has 23 saves on the season, which ranks third in the conference for that category.
Men's Soccer
The men earned a 3-3 draw with Paul Quinn on Thursday, so they will be looking for their first conference win of the season as they meet Southwest. The Mustangs are 1-0 in conference after defeating Texas College, 1-0 Thursday.
Johan Arevalo booted in two goals in Thursday's contest to continue being a spark to the Bulldogs' offense. Arevalo is now tied as the leading scorer in the RRAC with four goals this season. He is also tied as the leader in points with 10.
Kevin Ochoa scored the other goal in Thursday's match. Ochoa has found the goal three times this season as he joins Arevalo as one of two Bulldogs with more than one goal scored this season. Ochoa has earned seven points this season, which ranks fourth in the conference.
Gerardo Martinez and Kyang Dieu Merci have also been notable players for JCU. Martinez has one goal scored, two assists, four points, and seven shots on goal to show for six starts this season. Dieu Merci has played in five games and has one goal, two assists, and seven shots on goal.
Avramov Vladimir has primarily played the goalie position with Jahir Arevalo stepping in to play one and a half games through the past two games. Vladimir has allowed seven goals while collecting 11 saves through five games. Jahir Arevalo has played in two games and earned one start. He has allowed one goal while picking up seven saves and a shutout.
